Sol de Janeiro's First Men's Cologne, by the Numbers

Sol de Janeiro built its following on sweet, tropical body mists. In July, the brand launched Cheiroso, its first line of men's colognes. A brand known for pink bottles and gourmand scents now had to sell to men without confusing the fans who made it famous.

Tellagence Discover analyzed nearly 3,000 mentions of the launch across social networks, news, blogs, forums and reviews. The friction many expected never showed up. Women, the brand's core fans, drove the conversation and much of the purchase intent.

TL;DR: The Quick Catch-Up

The Activation/Event: Sol de Janeiro launched Cheiroso 7 and Cheiroso 10, two $26 cologne mists, with a "Play It Your Way" campaign built on Brazil's pelada pickup soccer culture.

The Viral Spectacle: Brazilian actor André Lamoglia and lifestyle creators fronted the launch. Conversation peaked the week of July 20 with 861 mentions, 29% of the total.

The Conflict/Backlash: Fears that men would reject a female-coded brand didn't hold up. Negative sentiment stayed at 5%, and most of it came from general fatigue with constant beauty launches.

The Tellagence Takeaway: Sol de Janeiro didn't have to build a male audience from scratch. Its female fans acted as discoverers, gifters and recommenders for the men in their lives.

What the Data Actually Showed

  1. Women drove the purchase loop

Women who already love the brand's mists talked about buying Cheiroso for partners, brothers and friends. That gifting skips the hardest step in marketing to men: getting them to discover a new brand at all. Fans framed the cologne as an easy, low-risk gift from a brand they trust.

  2. Men talked about the scent

When men discussed Cheiroso, they focused on the notes. Cedarwood came up in 254 mentions and lavender in 229, and fans also mentioned coconut and warm vanilla. Reviewers compared the woodsy profile to designer fragrances, which helped the line read as a serious men's scent.

  3. Soccer opened the door, and the product closed the sale

The pelada theme and jersey-style numbering, 7 and 10, gave the launch a sporty entry point that fit the brand's Brazilian identity. Creator posts from André Lamoglia drew attention. Purchase intent, though, centered on all-day longevity and the $26 price, well below most designer colognes.

  4. Reception stayed positive

Across 2,965 records collected from July 1 to August 23, 2026, net sentiment reached +53% (58% positive, 5% negative). The small negative pocket targeted rapid-fire beauty releases in general. Few posts criticized Cheiroso itself.

The Discover Difference

A keyword tool would see a men's cologne launch full of women's voices. It could easily read that as a campaign missing its target audience.

Tellagence Discover clusters conversation by meaning. It separated cultural buzz from product talk and showed what each did. Soccer culture started the conversation. Women's gifting and the woodsy scent profile drove interest in buying. Discover also placed the 5% negative sentiment in its own "release fatigue" cluster, apart from the product.

Choices: Where to go from here?

If you're managing a brand extension or a cross-gender launch, here are three ways to apply these findings.

Option A: Build the gifter bridge

Speak to your loyal female customers with "gift for him" framing, and let them drive trial for the men in their lives.

Option B: Lead with the notes

Put the woodsy notes — cedarwood, lavender and vanilla woods — at the top of product pages and ad copy to reassure male buyers who expect something sweet.

Option C: Partner with creator couples

Couples content already performs well around Cheiroso. Partner with creator couples to show real reactions and make the product easy to talk about.
